Student Shot At East Bay High School: 'No Child Should Have To Experience This'

Two suspects, both minors, were detained in connection with the shooting, police said.

OAKLAND, CA — A student was hospitalized following a shooting at an Oakland High School on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Two minors were arrested in connection with the shooting, and officers recovered two firearms, according to the Oakland Police Department.

"No child should have to experience this," Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee told reporters Thursday. "No school should have to be traumatized by what took place."

It's unclear what exactly led up to the shooting, which authorities said took place sometime before 1:30 p.m. at Skyline High School.

The shooting appeared to have taken place at a school bathroom, and the campus was placed on temporary lockdown to secure the area, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

There, officers found a minor who had been shot at least once. Officers treated the child until medical personnel arrived and took them to a local hospital, police said, adding that they are in stable condition.

"This is unacceptable," Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief James Beere told reporters at the scene. "The violence that we're seeing in schools and the city nationwide is disgusting. These are our children, and having access to firearms alone is unbelievable, let alone that violence is occurring in and around our campuses."

"It's just not going to be tolerated," Beere said.

The Oakland Police Department asks that anyone with more information on the shooting contact authorities at 510-238-3426.
