Altadena Fire Map: See Eaton Fire Perimeter, Evacuation Areas

The Eaton Fire broke out Tuesday evening and exploded across the hills amid raging Santa Ana winds, forcing evacuations.

ALTADENA, CA — The Santa Ana wind-driven Eaton Fire broke out Tuesday evening and exploded to about 10,600 acres by Wednesday, sending residents fleeing from their foothill homes.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service quickly issued mandatory evacuations all the way from the Eaton Canyon area to Foothill (210) Freeway and expanded orders to include much of Altadena, Arcadia Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Monrovia and La Cañada Flintridge. The fire claimed the lives of at least five people who did not evacuate in time, and several others have been injured.

On Wednesday morning homes near Glen Avenue and Montana in Pasadena were burning and several blocks of homes around West Harriet Street in Altadena were engulfed in flames with few homes spared.

The fire was reported at about 6:20 p.m. near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive in the Altadena foothills, according to Cal Fire. By midnight, it had scorched 1,000 acres, according to CalFire.

As of Tuesday, mandatory evacuation orders were in place for the area north of New York Drive, east of Altadena Drive and west of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, according to Angeles National Forest officials. Authorities were working to establish an evacuation center. Large swaths of Pasadena and portions of Sierra Madrea are under evacuation warning, meaning residents should be ready to leave on a moment's notice.

Residents who are high-risk, elderly or disabled and need evacuation assistance should call 911.

MANDATORY EVACUATIONS

As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday residents in the following areas are ordered to evacuate:

  • All residents living north of Sierra Madre, east of Allen and west of Santa Anita Drive
  • North of New York Drive, East of Altadena Drive, West of Sierra Madre Villa Ave
  • East Altadena Dr
  • Kinneloa Canyon Rd
  • Outpost Lane
  • Glen Springs Rd
  • Coolidge Ave
  • Miranda
  • Roosevelt Ave
  • Veranda
  • Kenclare
  • Fox Ridge Dr
  • Canyon Close Rd
  • Grand Oaks Ave
  • All Arcadia residents north of Orange Grove Avenue have been ordered to evacuate. Residents in the evacuation area are advised to use Highland Oaks Drive to leave the area. A temporary evacuation center has been established at the Arcadia Community Center at 375 Campus Drive.

It was unclear how many people were impacted by the order.

A senior center in Altadena has been evacuated due to the Eaton Fire, leaving many residents stranded in a parking lot near a 7-Eleven. Several medical vehicles and buses are being used to move the seniors out of the area.

The Palisades Fire burning on Los Angeles County's westside Tuesday yielded scenes of chaos with people jumping into pools to escape flames, abandoning their cars in traffic, and filming infernos of flames surrounding their homes while they remained trapped inside. The chaos and devastation served as a stark reminder to residents impacted by the newly erupted Eaton Fire to heed evacuation orders and warnings before it's too late.
