Arcadia Planning Family Nature Hike

City residents are invited to participate in a five-mile roundtrip hike on a trailhead in Altadena on May 11.

From the city of Arcadia:

We will meet at the Community Center on Saturday May 11 at 7:30 a.m. sharp and board a bus to the trailhead in Altadena. This hike is one of the more arduous hikes that we have offered through the Recreation Department. It is five (5) miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and is considered a moderate to difficult intensity level. Professor Thaddeus S.C. Lowe’s mountain railway and resort was Southern California’s must-visit attraction, drawing more than 3 million visitors from 1896 to 1936.

Echo Mountain, known as the “White City”, was the heart of the resort with the elegant Echo Mountain House Hotel, chalet, observatory and small zoo. It has all since vanished, but this fascinating hike takes you to the ruins of this historic landmark. The first mile is in the shade but the rest is in the sun, so please bring sunscreen, water and a hat for some added shade. We will do some light stretching before we go on the hike and at the top we will enjoy our lunch, the ruins, reading the historical plaques and the beautiful views.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. The cost is $15 and includes lunch and transportation.
