Modular Units on U.S. Forest Service Building Construction Site Engulfed in Flames

A fire burned down a cluster of modular buildings that temporarily housed U.S.Forest Service operations.

Flames completely destroyed a cluster of modular units on the construction site of the new U.S. Forest Service building on Santa Anita Avenue early Wednesday morning.

The 26 units temporarily housed Forest Service operations during constuction of the new facility, which did not sustain any damage, Deputy Fire Chief Kurt Norwood said, adding that no injuries had been reported.

Norwood said the fire began shortly after midnight. Crews were still on scene as of 8 a.m. completing overhaul operations.

Meanwhile, the cause and nature of the fire remains a mystery.

"I can't speculate if it was suspicious or accidental until we get further information from our arson investigators, who are working in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service."

The modular units were in the process of being removed from the site because Forest Service personnel had already begun moving their offices into the permanent facility, Norwood said.
