Blotter: Man Accidentally Saws Finger Off

Paramedics also assisted Arcadia Police with a mentally ill man begging officers to kill him.

The Arcadia Fire Department responded to a variety of emergency calls during the week of March 3-9, 2013. The following is a breakdown of incident types recorded for this time period:

Vehicle Fire

At 1:17 p.m. on March 3, Engine 106, Engine 105, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105 and Battalion 105, with units from the Los Angeles County and Monrovia Fire Departments, responded to a vehicle fire inside a structure in the 100 block of Longley Way. Upon arrival, fire personnel immediately began suppression measures as they found heavy smoke and fire coming from a vehicle parked in a detached garage. Although the vehicle sustained severe fire damage, fire crews extinguished the fire quickly, preserving the structure. Investigators determined the cause and origin of the fire as mechanical failure in the engine compartment.

At 11:55 p.m. on March 4, Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 00 block of El Dorado Street. Fire crews arrived to find a 37-year-old man suffering from chest pain. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene, including 12 lead electrocardiogram, intravenous access, cardiac medications and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.

Medical Assist: Chest Pains

At 3:13 p.m. on March 5, Truck 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 600 block of West Duarte Road. Upon arrival, fire personnel evaluated a man suffering from chest pain with shortness of breath. The patient received advanced life support at the scene, including oxygen therapy, 12-lead cardiac monitoring, intravenous access and drug therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Man Cuts Finger off With Power Saw

At 10:34 a.m. on March 6, Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a trauma call in the 100 block of Fano Street. Fire crews arrived on scene to find a man who had accidentally amputated his finger with a power saw. Paramedics assessed the patient and provided intravenous fluids coupled with pain medication. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Three-Vehicle Injury Collision

At 9:10 a.m. on March 7, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 106, and Battalion 105 responded to a traffic collision with the report of person trapped in the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. Fire crews arrived on scene to find a traffic collision involving three vehicles with one patient. Paramedics assessed and placed the patient in full cerebral spinal precautions and transported the patient to a local hospital.

Man Begs Police Officers to Kill Him

At 8:32 p.m. on March 8, Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist at the intersection of Bonita Street and First Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find a 27-year-old man in Arcadia Police custody. The patient was extremely agitated and combative, asking police officers to kill him. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene, placing the patient in soft restraints and administering a 12- lead electrocardiogram and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.

Medical Assist: Seizure

At 1:52 p.m. on March 9, Engine 105 and Rescue Ambulance 105 responded to a medical assist in the 1800 block of South Seventh Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find a 60-year-old man experiencing a seizure. Paramedics provided advanced life support measures on scene, including 12 lead electrocardiogram, intravenous access, intravenous medication and oxygen therapy. The patient was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for further evaluation.
