Police Blotter: DUI Falls Asleep at the Wheel in Middle of Intersection

For the period of Oct. 9-15, the responded to 947 calls for service, 133 of which required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Oct. 9:

Shortly after 2 p.m., loss prevention personnel from at the detained a teenage girl for theft. The 15-year-old suspect hid merchandise in her purse and left the store without making payment. Officers placed her under arrest for commercial burglary.

At about 9:18 p.m., officers responded to at 405 South Santa Anita Avenue regarding an attempted suicide. A 28-year-old woman had cut her wrists and was bleeding. The treated her at the scene and transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment and a psychological evaluation.

Oct. 10:

Between 1 p.m. and 5:20 p.m., an auto theft occurred at the . The suspect(s) stole a red, 1989 Nissan pick-up truck.

Between 11:40 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., an auto burglary occurred in the 00 block of Bonita Street. The suspect(s) entered the vehicle by smashing the front passenger side window. Once inside, the suspect(s) stole a GPS unit.

Oct. 11:

Shortly after midnight, a resident in the 700 block of Southview Road heard a loud noise like breaking glass, and looked out her window. The resident saw a man running from the parking lot to a red SUV that fled the location. An investigation revealed that two vehicles had been burglarized in the 700-800 blocks of Hungate Lane. The suspect(s) shattered a window on each car and stole an iPod from each car. Based on the items stolen, method of entry, and location, it appears these crimes were committed by the same suspect(s).

At about 10 p.m., loss prevention personnel from at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall detained a teenage girl for theft. The 16-year-old suspect picked up merchandise and left the store without paying. Police also discovered additional items from Gill Hicks, Sephora, , , and on her person and arrested her for commercial burglary.  

Oct. 12:

At about 1:29 p.m., officers responded to the 1100 block of West Duarte Road regarding a report of vandalism. Sometime between Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m., and Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., the suspect(s) used orange spray paint to write on the east block wall of the location.

Two vehicles parked next to each other in the 1100 block of Fairview Avenue were burglarized sometime between October 11 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 12 at 7:40 a.m. The suspect(s) shattered a passenger side window on each car and stole electronics, a backpack and a garage remote. 

Oct. 13:

At approximately 5:03 p.m., officers responded to at 800 South Santa Anita Avenue regarding a trespassing report. Police located the  53-year-old suspect. A records request revealed he had a felony warrant for which police arrested him.

Between Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. and Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., a residential burglary occurred in the 200 block of East Sycamore Avenue. The suspect(s) entered the residence through unknown means. Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked an upstairs bedroom and stole electronics and other miscellaneous items.

Oct. 14:

At 2:02 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a man driving a vehicle on Peck Road and Foothill Transit Way at a speed slower than the posted speed limit. The vehicle also had a broken tail light. The officer determined that the 24-year-old driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. He was arrested and booked at the Arcadia City Jail.

Around 2:25 p.m., loss prevention personnel from at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall reported they had detained a woman for theft. The suspect concealed merchandise in a used H&M shopping bag inside of a baby stroller and left the store without paying. The 21-year-old suspect was taken into custody for petty theft.

Oct. 15:

At about 3:32 a.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Golden West and Arcadia avenues to check on a man slumped over in his vehicle while stopped in the middle of the intersection. The officer found the man asleep in the driver's seat, with the vehicle in drive and his foot on the brake. An investigation revealed he was under the influence and unable to care for himself. Officers transported the 20-year-old to the Arcadia City Jail for blood testing and later booked him for DUI. 

Around 3:50 p.m., the victim of a theft came to the Arcadia Police Department front counter to report her credit cards stolen by a student she tutors at the . The victim said she met with said student for his weekly tutoring lesson on Oct. 14 and left her purse with the student momentarily while she retrieved a book to read. The victim returned home after the lesson. Bank of America later informed her of suspicious charges. The victim found two of her credit cards missing from her wallet and suspected her student had taken them.  The student's mother later confirmed that her 13-year-old son had taken the cards. Officers arrested him for possession of stolen access cards.
