City to Consider Prohibition on Single Cigars, Blunt Wraps

The City Council will discuss banning the sale of individual cigars at most stores in Baldwin Park at its meeting on Wednesday.

The ban would apply to cigars, cigarillos, tiparillos, blunts and blunt wraps, according to the city staff report.  It would be enforced at any store where the primary business was not the sale of cigars, meaning only a cigar shop would be enforced.

The purpose of the ban would be to prevent the marketing of the products to Baldwin Park's youth, according to the staff reports, which notes the products are available in flavors like grape and cotton candy.

A city survey of small retailers noted that cigarillos are found for sale at 78 percent of stores, and in 40 percent, are placed within three feet of candy displays.

The issue will be discussed at the Wednesday City Council meeting at 7:30 at City Hall.
