Salary Increase Sought For Reserve Police Officers

Reserve Police Officers in Baldwin Park could receive a considerable salary increase, from $8 to $18 per hour, if a measure to increase their base salary is approved at the City Council meeting to be held this evening.

According to a memorandum sent by Police Chief Lili Hadsell to Council members, reserve agents are currently performing similar duties to those of regular officers, but due to the low wages they receive it is difficult to hire and retain people for these positions.

"Applicants for the Reserve Officer position go through the same rigorous selection process as regular police officers, with background checks, psychological exams, verbal and written tests," described Hadsell in her memorandum.

She also clarified that reserve agents receive the same training as regular officers, and face the same risks associated with public safety positions.

According to Hadsell, the increase in pay would still allow the hiring of four more reserve officers for the same cost of hiring one regular officer, because the reserve positions do not include medical benefits or City-funded retirement.

A reserve officer can work a maximum of 999 hours per year, so the city would not have to pay more than $18,000 per agent.

Other topics to be discussed during tonight's meeting include an increase in rental costs for various municipal buildings, as well as approval for alcohol consumption in the to increase the likelihood of its rental for parties and events.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber, at 14403 East Pacific Avenue.
