According to Sheriff's Sgt. Miguel Ramos of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the suspect was involved in a dispute with his former girlfriend, whose identity was not released, around 7:30 a.m. Monday at a residence in the 2000 block of Gail Drive.

Ramos said Ramirez became enraged, striking the woman in the "head, face and neck ... with a heavy metal object, causing significant injuries."

Before the victim could call 911, the suspect allegedly grabbed their toddler son, Bradley Nicolas, and fled in his car, the sergeant said.

"Based on the information received by deputies, it was believed the child was in danger," Ramos said.

A regional Amber Alert, focusing on Southern California, was issued by the California Highway Patrol, alerting the public to be on the lookout for the suspect and his vehicle, a 2000 Dodge Caravan.

Within an hour of the alert, a Nuevo resident spotted the suspect in the 22000 block of Ramona Avenue and called 911. Ramos said deputies converged on the location and took the suspect into custody without incident. Bradley was found unharmed and returned to his mother, who is recovering from her injuries, authorities said.

Background information on Ramirez was not available.
