Banning High School Student Accused Of Attacking Police, Arson

BANNING, CA — A student at Banning High School was arrested after allegedly attempting to attack several police officers, authorities said Saturday.

Banning police officers who were assigned as school resource officers responded to the school on Aug. 30 at approximately 1:10 p.m. to a report of a student who had set off fireworks inside an occupied building on campus and caused damage to school property.

The incident was captured by security cameras on campus which led to the student's arrest on suspicion of arson, authorities said. The juvenile allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to assault the officers.

Neither the student nor the officers involved were injured during the incident.

The student was later booked into Riverside County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of arson, resisting a peace officer, and criminal threats.

According to the Banning Police Department, incidents involving fireworks have been an ongoing problem since the start of the school year and are taken very seriously by law enforcement and school staff.
