Banning Man Struck, Killed By Vehicle

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA — A 29-year-old Banning man was stuck and killed by a vehicle early Saturday morning on a major thoroughfare in Cathedral City. The crash occurred at 2:10 a.m. in the 28400 block of Date Palm Drive, just south of Interstate 10, Cathedral City Police Cmdr. Paul Herrera said.

The victim, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 28-year-old Desert Hot Springs man who was behind the wheel of the vehicle was heading northbound when he struck the pedestrian, according to Herrera. He was detained by police but later released.

Herrera said investigators ruled out drugs or alcohol as the cause of the crash.

It was not immediately clear why the Banning man was in the roadway when he was struck.

Northbound Date Palm Drive was closed to traffic at the scene for several hours after the crash but has since reopened.
