BANNING, CA — The Banning Youth Leaders have filed a letter supporting the Blue Zones Project's new tobacco and alcohol policies, to be read at the next city council meeting in January.

At a regular meeting, the Youth Council learned about the Blue Zones Project in August. As Thomas Miranda elaborated on four policies under development by the Blue Zone team, the youth council determined that the initiatives regarding tobacco and alcohol were ones they would happily support.

As discussed in their letter, the Youth Council writes:

"As youth leaders in our city, we see firsthand the importance of fostering environments that protect young people and encourage healthy decision-making," the letter states. "The presence and accessibility of tobacco and alcohol hae long-term impacts on youth development, community safety, and overall well-being. By implementing policies that reduce exposure and limit access, Banning is taking a proactive step toward building a future where young people can thrive," the letter says.

"The Youth Council believes that these policies not only align with the mission of the Blue Zones Project, but also reflect the values of our city—prioritizing health, safety, and opportunity for every generation."

"The Youth Council's letter of support expresses strong endorsement for these initiatives," said Ralph Wright, Parks and Recreation Director. "This letter stands as a testament to the commitment to youth welfare and safety and will ultimately be presented to the City Council for their approval."

The meeting will take place on January 6, at 5 p.m., in the City Council Chambers.
