MORENO VALLEY, CA — A child died in a house fire in Moreno Valley that injured multiple people Sunday, including four sheriff's deputies.

The fire was reported just before 1:30 a.m. in the 24300 block of Dolan Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said Riverside County sheriff's deputies were the first to arrive at the scene and found the home engulfed in flames and filled with smoke.

The deputies braved the smoke to enter the home and rescue two residents before the smoke and heat prevented them from re-entering the building and retrieving other victims, including a child who died in the fire, the mayor said.

Fire officials said four people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, though it was not immediately clear if the child was included in that count.

Four deputies were also evaluated at the scene for minor injuries.

"I cannot even imagine what the deputies, victims, and everyone at this incident went through," Gutierrez said in a news release. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family for the loss of their child, and for our responders to be at peace after experiencing such a traumatic event. On behalf of the city, I thank our first responders for their heroic acts."
