I-10 Traffic, Trains Halted After Massive Diesel Spill In Banning

The crash involving two big rigs was reported Thursday on eastbound I-10.

BANNING, CA — Cleanup continued Thursday morning after two big rigs crashed early Thursday morning on eastbound Interstate 10, east of Hargrave Street in Banning.

The crash, reported at 1:35 a.m., involved downed power lines and approximately 2,500 gallons of leaked fuel.

Union Pacific Railroad stopped all train traffic in both directions, and Interstate 10 was partially closed, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

As of 10:15 a.m., eastbound I-10 remained partially shut down. The California Highway Patrol is reporting all lanes are expected to reopen at approximately noon.

According to preliminary CHP information and details from the fire department, one of the semis involved in the crash was carrying diesel fuel. It turned on its side in the wreck and fuel spilled.

Riverside County Environmental Health/Hazardous Materials is on scene and Banning Electric is working on the downed power lines, according to the fire department.

The two truckers involved in the crash were evaluated on scene by paramedics. An update on their condition was unavailable.

The CHP is investigating the crash cause.
