RivCo Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency Inside Banning Jail: RSO

BANNING, CA — A 61-year-old man being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning died after suffering a medical emergency, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department announced Sunday.

Michael Dupas of Perris, was found in his cell around 6:20 a.m. Thursday, suffering an undisclosed medical emergency.

Custody staff and jail medical personnel administered emergency medical assistance and the inmate was later transported to a hospital by paramedics, where he later died, according to Sgt. Christopher Wedel.

"The inmate's health continued to decline while at the hospital, and staff performed life-saving measures, but he was ultimately pronounced dead on Friday," the department announced. His family was notified of his death at that time.

Dupas was initially arrested on Aug. 8 in Mead Valley and was held on $50,000 bail at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
