Strong Earthquake Shakes Pass Area, Centered Near Yucaipa

The 3.7-magnitude quake was centered near Yucaipa, the U.S.G.S. reports.

YUCAIPA, CA — A strong earthquake shook the Pass Area on Thursday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey reports. It was measured at 3.7-magnitude and hit at 6:19 p.m.

According to the U.S.G.S., it was centered:

  • 3 miles WSW of Yucaipa
  • 5.5 miles SW of Calimesa
  • 8.1 miles W of Mentone
  • 15.9 miles WSW of Moreno Valley
  • 17.9 miles WNW of San Bernardino
  • 30.9 miles ESE of Palm Springs

Back-to-back earthquakes rattled the Inland Empire earlier Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The first temblor measured a magnitude 2.5 and struck at 11:54 a.m. just southwest of Salton City, near the Salton Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Society. A second quake initially measuring a magnitude of 3.3 struck the same region less than a minute later, the USGS reported. Shortly after the report, the agency upgraded the second temblor to a magnitude 3.6.

About 130 miles north of the area, another magnitude 3.3 quake struck at 12:30 p.m. near San Bernardino County's Lytle Creek, according to the USGS reporting map. About an hour later, a smaller magnitude 2.9 temblor struck the same area, the agency reported.
