Dozens of water skiers 12-60 years old will compete in today's 64th annual Catalina Ski Race, which started at 8 a.m. from Long Beach and goes to Avalon - - and back.
The race is the world's only regularly-scheduled open-ocean ski race, covering about 60 miles.
The record time of completion is about 50 minutes. About 70 entries compete in categories, such as boats less than 21 feet and big boaets.

The boats range in size from 18 to 43 feet, according to race organizers. Some of the boats are capable of reaching speeds of about 80 mph. Most race teams consist of three people, two people in the boat and the skier.
The race finish line will be near the Queen Mary.
