Long Beach Opens Cooling Centers in Midst of Heatwave

Where to cool off if you just can't take it anymore.

With hot weather expected to continue baking the Southland into the weekend, extended hours will be offered at six cooling centers in Long Beach today and tomorrow.

The centers will remain open until 7 tonight, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

  • Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.
  • Silverado Community Center, 1545 W. 31st St.
  • El Dorado West Community Center, 2800 Studebaker Road
  • Cesar Chavez Community Center, 401 Golden Ave.
  • McBride Community Center, 1550 Martin Luther King Ave.
  • Long Beach Senior Center, 1150 E. Fourth St.

The city’s 12 public libraries will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. City officials noted that most malls, stores and theaters also offer air conditioning and can offer a respite from the heat.
