6 Benicia Artists To Beautify City's Traffic Signal Boxes

BENICIA, CA — Benicia artists of every age are transforming traffic signal controller boxes this month with a diverse array of paintings. The artists had their designs approved by the Benicia City Council earlier this year, according to the city.
One of the first paintings will be at the corner of First and Military streets near the library. On that controller, ninth-grader Jiana Lyons and 10th-grader Samantha Johnson will paint a reader enjoying a novel under a tree with shelves of books in the background.
The artwork will coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the 150 East L Street Library, according to the city.

Lyons won the 18th annual Napa-Solano PTA art contest, which asked artists to depict the theme "Diversity Means...". Johnson won the Solano County Office of Education's Art Fair in 2017 with her graphite drawings for the theme "Who Are You?"
Artists Kerry Lee Laird, Cody Frisinger, Lisa Kankkunen and Bill Gian will also participate in the project, the city said. Nine works across the city will likely be complete by the end of summer.
