Bay Area To Get More Toll Lanes: What To Know
A stretch of Bay Area freeway will become Express Lanes open to cars with FasTrak, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission announced.

FAIRFIELD, CA — I-80 drivers stuck in traffic will soon be able to pay their way out. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission announced Friday that new express lanes on I-80 between Fairfield and Vacaville in Solano County will begin operating on Dec. 16.
The 18-mile stretch between Red Top Road in Fairfield and I-505 in Vacaville will soon operate Express Lanes in both directions seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the MTC. All vehicles must have a FasTrak toll tag to use the Express Lanes. Carpools will three or more people, vanpools, buses, and motorcycles will be able to travel toll-free by using a FasTrak Flex toll tag set to the 3+ position. Two-person carpools will be able to pay half -price tolls with a FasTrak Flex tag set to “2.” Solo drivers with a FasTrak will pay the full price.

Digital signs will tell drives what the toll rates are. Drivers will always pay the toll displayed when they enter the Express Lane, even if rates change during their trip. The lanes on this stretch will feature four toll zones in each direction.

- I-680 southbound from Concord to Dublin
- I-680 northbound fom Dublin to Danville
- I-580 from Dublin to Livermore in both directions
- I-880 southbound from Oakland to San Jose
- I-880 northbound from San Jose to Castro Valley
- 101 from San Jose to South San Francisco in both directions
A lane is currently being constructed on I-680 southbound from Dublin to Sunol.
