Air District Asks Bay Area Residents to β€œSpare the Air” Today

High heat is expected to increase smog levels in the Bay Area today.

Wednesday,Β theΒ Bay AreaΒ AirΒ Quality Management District issuedΒ theΒ fifth SpareΒ theΒ AirΒ Alert for smog in 2012.

AirΒ quality inΒ theΒ Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy Thursday, August 9. There is no free transit and there is no wood burning ban in place.Β TheΒ AirΒ District recommends residents avoid outdoor activities duringΒ theΒ hottest part ofΒ theΒ day, whenΒ air quality is unhealthiest.
"With fiveΒ SpareΒ theΒ AirΒ Alerts already this summer andΒ theΒ hottest weather ofΒ theΒ season likely yet to come, we need to do more to reduceΒ airΒ pollution," said Jack Broadbent, executive officer ofΒ theΒ AirΒ District. "To do this, we must reduceΒ theΒ number of cars on Bay Area roads so we can avoid unhealthyΒ airΒ during high heat days."
TheΒ AirΒ District encouragesΒ theΒ public to re-think their commute by taking transit, carpooling, working from home or biking and leave their car at home twice a week to avoidairΒ pollution that builds up and creates unhealthy smog whenΒ theΒ Bay Area experiences high temperatures.
SpareΒ theΒ AirΒ Alerts are issued when ozone pollution is forecast to reach unhealthy levels. Ozone, or smog, can cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain, trigger asthma, inflametheΒ lining ofΒ theΒ lungs and worsen bronchitis and emphysema. Long-term exposure to ozone can reduce lung function. Ozone pollution is particularly harmful for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. When aΒ SpareΒ theΒ AirΒ Alert is issued, outdoor exercise should be done only inΒ theΒ early morning hours when ozone concentrations are lower.
Smog is formed when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides from motor vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors, industrial emissions and household chemicals combine with oxygen inΒ theΒ presence of heat and sunlight.
Residents can helpΒ SpareΒ theΒ AirΒ by carpooling, taking transit, switching to an electric vehicle, biking or walking. VisitΒ sparetheair.orgΒ orΒ 511.orgΒ for more information about commute alternatives.
