Benicia Road Bridge Reopens At I-80; Georgia Street Bridge Closes

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — The Benicia Road overcrossing at Interstate 80 reopened Wednesday to the traveling public after Caltrans crews increased the vertical clearance to 16 feet, 6 inches to meet the federal standards.

The work is part of the I-80 Six Bridges Project, an SB1 project. Caltrans will continue to increase the vertical clearance on three more I-80 overcrossings in the city of Vallejo just north of the Carquinez Bridge.

The work started with the Springs Road bridge, which was completed in spring 2021. The Magazine Street overcrossing followed and was completed in summer 2021, and now the work on the Benicia Road bridge is done.

Next up are the I-80 overcrossings at Georgia, Tennessee and Redwood streets.

Georgia Street Bridge Detour Routes

The Georgia Street bridge at I-80 was scheduled to be closed as of Thursday morning.

In about two weeks, the Tennessee Street overcrossing will also close, and both bridges are scheduled to be closed for around four months, Caltrans officials said in a news release.

Westbound Detour

Motorists traveling westbound on Georgia Street will need to drive northbound on Miller Avenue, turn onto westbound Springs Road, then left onto southbound 14th Street to Georgia Street.

Eastbound Detour

Motorists traveling eastbound on Georgia Street will need to turn left onto northbound 14th Street to eastbound Springs Road to southbound Miller Avenue and back onto Georgia Street; then travel eastbound on Benicia Road to southbound Lemon Street and take eastbound I-780/Curtola Parkway and exit using the ramp to Spruce Street, then head westbound on Spruce Street to northbound Laurel Street to Benicia Road.

Tennessee Street Bridge Detour Routes

Westbound Detour

Motorists traveling westbound on Tennessee Street will need to drive southbound on Humboldt Street, turn right onto westbound Springs Road, then turn left onto northbound Mariposa Street and take it to Tennessee Street.

Eastbound Detour

Motorists traveling eastbound on Tennessee Street will need to drive southbound on Mariposa Street, turn left onto eastbound Springs Road, then turn right onto northbound Humboldt Street and back onto Tennessee Street.

Caltrans will release additional details about the Georgia Street and Tennessee Street bridge closures as soon as information is available.
