Benicia Firefighters Help Knock Down I-780 Blaze

Benicia firefighters from Station 12 helped extinguish a three-alarm grass fire that temporarily shut down a lane of Interstate Highway 780 in Vallejo this morning, according to Vallejo fire officials and the California Highway Patrol. The fire was reported around 10:25 a.m. in a grassy area along eastbound Highway 780 near the Glen Cove Road exit.

The blaze briefly threatened a home in the area but did not end up damaging any structures or vehicles, Vallejo fire Capt. Matt Fenzl said. 

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, he said.
 
"The wind and weather were working in our favor today, so we were able to get a handle on it quickly," Fenzl said.

The blaze, which was actually five separate fires, drew a three-alarm response and prompted the closure of one lane of Highway 780, fire officials said.
 
No injuries were reported. Urrutia said the fire appears to have started accidentally, but the cause remains under investigation.
