The Kyle Hyland Foundation Launches New Behavioral Health Program
New Behavioral Health program including peer mentoring and therapeutic services will serve youth in Vallejo and Benicia

BENICIA — Sep 20, 2024 – The Kyle Hyland Foundation (KHF) for Teen Support is happy to announce the launch of a new Behavioral Health program which will serve the youth of Vallejo and Benicia. Peer mentoring and therapeutic services are now offered at the secondary level in the Vallejo City Unified School District (VCUSD). KHF is also offering individual as well as group therapy to teens in Benicia. All of these services are offered free of charge.
The Kyle Hyland Foundation is partnering with the VCUSD to provide additional services for students at the Wellness Centers at Vallejo and Jesse Bethel High Schools during school hours. Our goal is to help better support students by filling any potential gaps in mental health services at the secondary level. In addition to providing another individual who can support the youth in need, this program will allow VCUSD Wellness Center personnel to provide more intensive support to youth in crisis including coordination and referral to onsite therapists. This model of peer support is aligned with the feedback from youth focus groups reported in the 2021 Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan Update for Solano County. Both in 2017 and 2021, in response to the question of, “What supports would be helpful in preventing suicide?”, suggestions were made “to train peer counselors and embed them in schools and other youth-friendly areas.” KHF’s new peer mentoring program is geared towards providing this essential support.
In Benicia, peer mentoring is offered after school hours at the Hyland Teen Center (HTC) of Benicia at our drop-in recreational program which is open to students of Benicia Unified School District (BUSD) or Benicia residents in grades 8-12. The Kyle Hyland Foundation also offers individual and group therapy at the HTC for youth (and their families) who are 12-19 years of age and are Benicia residents or are students of BUSD. All of these services are provided free of charge, through funding received from the State of California.
