Minivan Driver Fatally Injured In I-80 Crash In Solano County

The fatal crash happened on westbound Interstate Highway 80 near Alamo Drive.

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — One person died when a minivan collided with the back of a big rig hauling a trailer early Monday on Interstate 80 in Vacaville.

The crash happened at 5 a.m. on westbound I-80 as the driver of a Toyota Sienna was traveling just west of Alamo Drive in an undetermined lane and changed lanes to the left for unknown reasons, California Highway Patrol Officer Jason Tyhurst said.

"The Toyota collided with the right rear of a trailer being towed by a Freightliner big rig, before traveling off the freeway and overturned numerous times," Tyhurst said. "The driver and the passenger were both ejected from the Toyota as a result of the collision."

The driver, a 43-year-old Dixon man, was taken to Kaiser Vacaville hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His name was not immediately released pending the notification of his next of kin.

The passenger of the Toyota, a 44-year-old Fairfield woman, was also taken to Kaiser Vacaville but survived the crash with major injuries.

The big-rig driver, a 43-year-old San Jose man, was not injured in the crash.

"At this time, it is unknown if distracted driving, drugs and/or alcohol intoxication is a factor in this traffic collision," Tyhurst said.

"Relate that you have information for CHP-Solano and Officer Barawed who is handling this investigation," Tyhurst said. "Any information obtained regarding this collision will be greatly appreciated."
