Tireless US Coast Guard Auxiliary Volunteer: Benicia Hero

We all know someone who's making a difference. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Benicia.

BENICIA, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

What does the local hero do?

In response to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, Glenn has volunteered for over twenty-one years with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary was created in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the uniformed, civilian non-law enforcement component of the United states Coast Guard. Throughout his twenty-one years of volunteer service, Glenn has been actively involved in providing leadership at USCG Station Vallejo and the local unit of Flotilla 52. Recently, Glenn organized a boat crew academy for civilian volunteers, become a emergency communications dispatcher for UCSG Station Vallejo and continues to coordinate a variety of training activities for approximately 110 other civilian Auxiliary volunteers throughout Solano County, CA. In addition, he was awarded the Auxiliary Commandant Letter of Commendation Ribbon for assisting a stranded boater in an on the water emergency while on patrol in the San Francisco Delta waterways. Glenn has been certified as a boat crew, recreational boating examiner, instructor, and various other qualifications. He had contributed over 8,000 hours of volunteer service. Glenn is a native of New York, and has lived in Benicia over twenty years with is wife Connie.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

Glenn's father was a World War 2 recipient of a Bronze Star having served in the US Army. His father's military service was the inspiration for Glenn to serve in the USCG Auxiliary in order to give back to his country and continue his family's legacy of service.
