40 Tickets Issued, 1 Arrest At Berkeley DUI Checkpoint

BERKELEY, CA — The Berkeley Police department reports that it wrote 40 citations and made one arrest on Dec. 12 during a DUI / Driver License Checkpoint.
- 27 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license.
- 1 driver was arrested for being in possession of two concealed handguns.
- The remaining citations were not specified.
The checkpoint was held on Shattuck Avenue at Parker Street.
A total of 883 drivers were contacted at the checkpoint, with 42 drivers evaluated for DUI and released.
According to BPD, DUI checkpoint locations are chosen because of past reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
