Author Brings Taco Truck Story to Berkeley Students

From Berkeley Public Schools: Students at three schools — LeConte, Longfellow and Thousand Oaks — last week got to enter the world of a young teen who yearned to break free of the label “Taco Queen,” a name given to her because of her family’s taco truck.

The story was presented by Jennifer Torres, the Stockton author of Stef Soto, Taco Queen. Torres read from her book and told students that everyone’s story is important. She also wove into her presentation three versions of “This Land Is My Land,” providing what BUSD Library Coordinator Becca Todd said was a “very powerful example of different cultures embracing a common theme.”

Her visit also included cut-and-fold paper forms for the students to make and color their own models of a taco truck — a kind of taco truck origami.

Ms. Torres is one of several authors who have made special visits to our schools this year thanks to the leadership of district Library Coordinator Becca Todd and our BSEP-funded school libraries.
