Berkeley Man Arrested on Gun, Drug Charges

Police say he is a convicted felon.

BRENTWOOD, CA — Brentwood police arrested a man last weekend for allegedly having a loaded gun and drugs for sale.

An officer was patrolling around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on Highway 4 near Lone Tree Way when he observed a vehicle with an alleged expired registration.

The driver, identified as 56-year-old Gerald Smith of Berkeley, allegedly had a suspended driver's license for a previous DUI and an open container of alcohol in the car. Police also said he was a convicted felon.

Officers searched the car and allegedly found a loaded firearm and a variety individually packaged drugs, a digital scale, and a large amount of cash, which police said indicated Smith was selling the drugs.

Police arrested Smith on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a gun, possession of drugs for sale and several other possible crimes.
