BERKELEY, CA — Berkeley turned 144 on Monday, and the city’s mayor took notice.
The East Bay city became incorporated April 4, 1878 on a land first envisioned in the early 19th century as a tourist destination. The city was named after Irish philosopher George Berkeley.
The was developed on land that was called Ocean View when it was settled in 1853.

Mayor Jesse Arreguín commemorated the city’s milestone in a tweet.
