Berkeley Police Plan DUI Checkpoint Friday Night

Berkeley police will deploy a DUI checkpoint Friday night and early Saturday morning to stop and arrest those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the department announced today, Thursday.

"If you drink, don't drive" is good advice anytime, but it will be especially good in Berkeley Friday night and early Saturday when police will conduct a DUI checkpoint on University Avenue.

Berkeley police will deploy a driving-under-the-influence checkpoint at University and Bonar Street from 8 p.m. to approximately 2 a.m., the department announced today, Thursday.

"Driving impaired is extremely dangerous and the consequences are serious and real," the department said. "Impaired drivers can kill themselves and others, and the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired are significant."

More than 10,000 people were killed nationwide in a traffic collisions involving impaired drivers in 2010, according to police.

Funding for the anti-DUI campaign comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the California Office of Traffic Safety, according to police.

Berkeley police urge community members to report drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.
