Berkeley Remembers Growing Up in B-Town

A Facebook group for nostalgic Berkeleyites celebrates its first month with members sharing old school pictures of themselves. The result? Lots of big hair and bell-bottoms.

You know you grew up in Berkeley when... you remember the Rocky Horror Picture Show playing at the theater on University Avenue. You bought comic books as a kid for under a buck at Comics and Comix. Your alarm clock was the Sante Fe train chugging down Sacramento Street. You remember "the dude with the long metal fingers who played the electric harp." You know how to take the bus from anywhere to anywhere. You don't really know what to think of the new Apple store on 4th Street.

These are just some of the many perspectives and memories being shared on the Facebook page, You know you grew up in Berkeley when..., which is now a month old and already more than 3,000 members strong.

To celebrate the milestone, nostalgic Berkeley residents and former Berkeleyites have been invited to share "old school" pictures of themselves that represent special memories and highlight the Berkeley spirit. The result so far has been an ecclectic collection spanning decades, with fashions ranging from the bell-bottoms and afros of the 70s to the denim overalls of the 90s. Submissions even include a photo of a picnic in Tilden Park from the mid-1950s.
