BERKELEY, CA — City officials in Berkeley have provided residents with some tips on how to reduce waste from holiday trees, including a suggestion to buy or rent a living tree and guidance for composting cut trees.

"When selecting your tree this holiday season, consider a plan that reduces waste and is made with the City's disposal rules in mind for when the season is over," reads a news release city officials issued Friday. "Living trees can be rented for the season or planted in your yard — and avoids waste altogether."

For residents who buy cut trees, keep in mind that the city does not compost trees flocked with fake snow. All decorations and anything added to the tree must be removed before it is cut down to fit in the green compost cart with the lid closed.

For residents who need to borrow tools for this last step, the city recommends visiting the Berkeley Tool Lending Library at 1901 Russell St.

Trees left on the curb won't get picked up as they can damage City side-loader collection trucks.
Residents can also drop off discarded trees at the Transfer Station at 1201 2nd St. (off Gilman Avenue), open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed: Christmas and New Year's days).
