Council Boosts Fees for Dog Licenses and More

The Berkeley City Council agreed to a range of proposed city fee increases, such as doubling dog license fees and imposing a new fee on those who sell homemade cookies and other foods.

The Berkeley City Council Tuesday night said yes to proposed fee increases – some quite hefty – for pet licenses and adoptions, marina berths and tattoo artists among others, according to Berkeleyside.

The fees are intended to narrow the deficits that the city runs in providing associated services, according to city staff.

Dog licenses would double in cost, dog and cat adoptions will rise by $25, producers of homemade cookies and other goods will pay $425 if selling through a retailer, and ear piercers will owe $44.

The one-year license fee for unaltered dog, which will jump to $75 from the current $30. The same license for a fixed dog would be double to $15 from $7.50.

More modest increases of 6 percent are proposed for berth fees at Berkeley Marina, while the annual registration fee for tattoo artists would rise to $85 from $44.
