Driver Jumps Curb, Strikes Multiple People, And Attempts Carjacking Near UC Berkeley: Police
A driver plowed into several pedestrians Tuesday morning in the East Bay. Police have since arrested the driver.
BERKELEY, CA — A driver rammed another vehicle, jumped the curb and struck a dog walker, a jogger and a cyclist near the University of California, Berkeley campus Tuesday morning, according to police and media reports.
At 7:46 a.m., Berkeley police received 9-1-1 calls reporting that a BMW driver struck pedestrians in the 2700 block of Belrose Avenue, according to the Berkeley Police Department.
The driver fled and abandoned the BMW on Derby Street, near Emerson Elementary School in the 2800 block of Garber Street, police said. The person then tried to carjack the vehicle of a woman with her child, police said, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Police arrested the driver in the 2800 block of College Avenue. Pedestrians struck by the driver received medical attention at the scene and were taken to a local hospital.
FOX2 KTVU, which first reported the incident, spoke to eyewitnesses, who recounted seeing "the driver of a grey BMW 52I hit a man in his 30s walking his dog and dragged him for at least a block, and then looped back, rammed another car, jumped the sidewalk and hit a man on a bicycle, which was left mangled at the scene."

A woman, who was jogging, was also struck by the BMW, FOX2 KTVU reported. An eyewitness told the outlet the woman "was hit so hard that she flipped over the BMW and cracked her head on the sidewalk."
"We understand the fear and concern this incident has caused, especially during the busy morning commute near schools and residential neighborhoods," the Berkeley Police Department said in a written statement.
Police did not provide the name or other details about the suspect taken into custody. An update on the condition of the pedestrians struck by the vehicle is not yet available.
