DUI Checkpoint Planned In Berkeley
St. Patrick's Day is just days away — so is a DUI checkpoint. The day, time and location have been announced.
BERKELEY, CA — The Berkeley Police Department will conduct a DUI Checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday on Shattuck Avenue near Parker Avenue. The location was chosen because of previous impaired driving-related crashes in the area.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk", Sergeant Dave Harston said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road, the police department said.
In addition to alcohol, Berkeley Police will be looking for signs of prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana impairment.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
