In support of Oxfam’s GROW Campaign and World Food Day, the San Francisco Bay Area Oxfam Action Corps will host a Hunger Banquet and screening of the documentary Africa’s Last Famine at the David Brower Center in Downtown Berkeley. This even is open to the public.
World Food Day 2011 was marked by one of the worst famines in recent history in the Horn of Africa. To shed light on this issue and empower people to join the fight to end poverty, the SF Bay Area Oxfam Action Corps is presenting a free Hunger Banquet and screening of the Link TV and Oxfam America co-produced short documentary Africa’s Last Famine. While guests may not leave with a full stomach, they might gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty — and feel motivated to help.
The Hunger Banquet allows participants to experience the inequalities in our world, the disproportion of food, wealth and resources and how our decisions affect others. Guests draw a ticket at random that assign them to either a high, middle, or low-income tier, based on the statistics about the number of people living in poverty in the world. Each income level has a corresponding story and meal (of differing portions).
