In Berkeley: March on Washington 50th Anniversary Celebration
A community symposium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream Speech," will held Saturday at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
It was half a century ago that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech as part of the March on Washington.
In celebration of the march's 50th anniversary this month, several organizations and leaders have organized a community symposium on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
The "Bay Area Celebration" of the march is being presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, Pacific School of Religion, Sojourn To The Past, and Bill Doggett Productions. It is supported by The Civil Rights@50 Campaign by the Equal Justice Society.
The event is free and open to the public, and takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The school is located at 1798 Scenic Ave.
"The mission of this symposium is to be a think tank for Bay Area social progressives inspired by the legacies of the March on Washington," according to the event website.
The program includes a keynote address by Clayborne Carson, Editor of the King Papers, discussion panels and community singing of freedom songs.
