Inmate Arrested In Connection To Berkeley Homicide Dies In Jail

BERKELEY, CA — The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is investigating the in-custody death of 57-year-old Steve Addison, who was arrested by Berkeley Police on suspicion of murder.

The Oakland resident, arrested on Aug. 1, had been held in a therapeutic housing unit at Santa Rita Jail due to pre-existing serious medical conditions.

At 1:50 a.m. on Monday, a deputy conducting a routine check noticed Addison struggling to breathe and speak. Jail medical staff and Wellpath, the facility’s medical partner, immediately responded, and Addison was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Despite medical intervention, Addison’s condition deteriorated, and he died on Tuesday at approximately 1:40 p.m.

His family was contacted and allowed to visit him in the hospital before his death.

The Alameda County Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

The District Attorney’s Office has been notified, and a report will be submitted to the California Attorney General's Office as required by state law.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.

Addison was accused in a shooting death in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way just before 7:30 p.m. on July 3.
