Police Blotter: 3 Armed Robberies, Victims Injured

The Berkeley police log for July 7-20 includes three armed robberies: a jogger who was struck at Aquatic Park, two people on Durant who were seriously injured with one sent to a hospital, and one on Cedar. All included cell phones.

The following items are selected and written by the Berkeley Police Department:

July 7

Fight, Gilman Street/2nd Street

On July 7, 2013 at approximately 10:20 p.m. BPD was dispatched to a report of a possible fight between two subjects near the intersection of Gilman and 2nd Streets.  Officers arrived on scene and located the involved parties.   It was determined that no physical altercation occurred, just a verbal argument.  One of the involved parties was arrested for public intoxication. 

July 8

Loud Reports, 1300 Block of Hearst Avenue

On Monday, July 8, 2013 at approximately 8:27 p.m. BPD officers responded to the 1300 block of Hearst Avenue for a report of loud reports.  Officers checking they area spoke with several residents and confirmed the loud reports were fireworks.

Robbery, South Aquatic Park

On Monday, July 8, 2013 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a robbery occurred in South Aquatic Park.  The victim was jogging in the park when he was approached by the suspects.  One of the suspects was armed with a gun.  The suspect struck the victim during the robbery.  The suspects stole the victim’s cell phone and keys.

July 9

Barking Dog, 1700 Block of Ward Street

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 10:06 p.m. a BPD officer was dispatched to the 1700 block of Ward Street for a report of a barking dog.  The caller reported the dog was in a rear yard and had been barking for over 30 minutes.  When the officer arrived the dog was quiet. 

July 10

Suspicious Circumstances, 9th Street/Allston Way

On Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at approximately 10:09 p.m. BPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of 9th Street and Allston Way for a possible auto burglary in progress.  The caller reported someone appeared to be breaking into a light colored truck.  The officers arrived on scene and contact a subject, who turned out to be the owner of the truck.  The owner had locked his keys inside the vehicle and was attempting to retrieve them. 

July 11

Stolen Auto Recovered, 3100 Block of Harper Street

On Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 7:31 p.m. a victim called BPD reporting he had located his previously reported stolen vehicle in the 3100 block of Harper Street.  The vehicle was stolen from the 1600 block of Prince Street on July 7, 2013.  The recovered vehicle is a 1994 Nissan Sentra, red in color. 

July 12

Vandalism, 1300 Block of Cedar Street

On Friday, July 12, 2013 at approximately 6:47 p.m. a BPD officer was dispatched to contact a victim in the 1300 block of Cedar Street.  The victim reported that their vehicle was vandalized.  An unknown suspect slashed the tire to the victim’s vehicle.

July 13

Suspicious Circumstances, 2900 Block of Domingo Avenue

On Saturday, July 13, 2013 at approximately 6:16 p.m. BPD received numerous reports of a subject being put into the trunk of a vehicle.  Callers reported that it didn’t look like the subject was forced, but felt it was suspicious.  Officers were able to locate the owner of the vehicle, who advised they were using the trunk because there were not enough seats in the vehicle for all of them.  The driver was reminded of the dangerous associated with such actions. 

July 14

Robbery, 2400 Block of Durant Avenue

On Sunday, July 14, 2013 at approximately 2:26 a.m. a robbery occurred in the 2400 block of Durant Avenue.  The two victims were walking in the area.  The suspects approached one of the victims and started punching him.  The other victim attempted to assist and was also struck.  The suspect stole one of the victim’s cell phones.  The suspects got into a vehicle and fled the area.  The victims suffered serious injuries as a result of the incident.  One victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The suspects are described as:

“Black Male, mid 20s, 6’2”, 200 pounds, shoulder length dread locks wearing long sleeve red t-shirt and blue jeans.”

“Black Male Adult”

Suspect vehicle:  Newer Red VW Passat.

 July 15

Loud Reports, 2nd Street/University Avenue

On Monday, July 15, 2013 at approximately 10:53 p.m. a caller reported hearing loud reports near the intersection of 2nd Street and University Avenue.  Officers were dispatched to the location.  They did not locate any victims or property damage. 

July 16

Noise Complaint, 2100 Block of Haste Street

On Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at approximately 11:32 p.m. a caller reported a loud group in the 2100 block of Haste Street.  They were reported talking loud and creating a disturbance.  A BPD officer was dispatched to the location, but the group was gone on arrival.

July 17

Robbery, 1300 Block of Cedar Street

On Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at approximately 11:45 p.m. a robbery occurred in the 1300 block of Cedar Street.  The victims were walking in the area when they were approached from behind by the suspects.  One of the suspects was armed with a gun.  The suspects demanded the victim’s property.  The suspects stole the victim’s backpacks and cell phones. 

The suspects are described as:

“Three Black males, 20s, average height and build wearing all dark clothing.”

July 18

Residential Burglary, 2200 Block of Dwight Way

On Thursday, July 18, 2013 at approximately 10:30 p.m. BPD received a report of a possible burglary in progress from the 2200 block of Dwight Way.  A caller reported seeing a suspect enter their neighbor’s window.  BPD officers arrived on scene and detained a subject.  After their subsequent investigation the subject was arrested for burglary. 

July 19

Brandishing, San Pablo Avenue/Channing Way

On Friday, July 19, 2013 at approximately 8:32 p.m. BPD received a report of a subject possibly brandishing a weapon near the intersection of San Pablo Avenue and Channing Way.  Officers were able to locate the involved parties.  There was a dispute between the two parties, who did not want further police services after the issue was resolved.

July 20 

DUI Arrest, 2100 Block of Kittredge Avenue

On Saturday, July 20, 2013 at approximately 9:40 p.m. BPD officer contacted a subject during a vehicle stop.  During their investigation they determined the driver appeared to be impaired.  The driver was arrested for DUI and an outstanding warrant.
