BERKELEY, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Kathleen Crandall who nominated Lori Gitter of Berkeley.

Local hero’s full name Lori Gitter

Local hero’s home state California

Local hero’s Patch Berkeley

How do you know the local hero? Married to her

What does the local hero do? Nurse

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored? She was a lead ICU nurse at Alta Bates hospital during the pandemic and put her life on the line to make sure others lived

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero? I want them to know that she walked out our front door every morning with only one thought in mind…who needs me? And then she went to work, especially at the beginning of the pandemic. She worked over time to do everything possible to keep anyone in the unit with COVID alive and her co workers spirits up. She’s a mom and a wife and a nurse. She could have lost her own life before the vaccines and her son would have lost a mom and I a partner of 24 years. Thank you for all you do, Lori Gitter!
