At 10:44 a.m., campus police said campus services such as dining, the libraries and parking garages were closed, and in-person classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
During the shelter-in-place, everyone inside a campus building was told to stay there and move away from windows and doors. People outside on campus property were told to leave campus and anyone on their way to campus was told to stay away.
Campus police said no active shooting situation was occurring.
In response to the campus emergency, seven schools in the Berkeley Unified School District were placed on a soft lockdown. That means all doors and gates were locked and monitored and staff were told to be extra vigilant.
The schools on soft lockdown were Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy, Willard Middle School, Berkeley Arts Magnet at Whittier School, Emerson Elementary School, Sylvia Mendez Elementary School, Washington Elementary School and King Child Development Center, according to the school district.
Campus police lifted the university's shelter-in-place order at 1:41 p.m.

Campus police said buildings would stay locked and in-person classes were canceled for the day.
Mogulof said the person police were seeking was located off-campus at 2 p.m. Citing police, Mogulof said the person, who was affiliated with the university, poses no immediate threat to campus safety.
