Take a Hike, Visit The Farm Animals, Paint Or Draw Nature This Weekend
Whether you are seeking a group hike, outdoor art, children's farm animals or story time — there is plenty to do for everyone.
BERKELEY, CA — Get out into nature without having to venture far this weekend, at Berkeley's Tilden Nature Area.
While you are welcome to enjoy the park on your own, here's a look at events taking place this weekend, along with the park's descriptions.
Saturday
10:30 - 11 a.m. Creature Feature — From reptiles to rabbits, cockroaches to cows, you’ll be amazed upon meeting our featured animal ambassador!
11:15 - 12:30 Nature Watercolor — Take some respite in nature, slow down, and use the natural settings around you to inspire your creativity through watercolor. We will meet at the environmental education center and move to a different location nearby. All materials provided.
2 - 3 p.m. Fun on the Farm — Get the inside scoop on the latest happenings at the little farm! What are the chicken saying? Why are goats so cute? Meat on the farm near the chicken coop.
2 - 3:30 p.m. People of Color: Walks and Talks — Join naturalist Melissa as we do a loop through the Tilden Nature Area. Admire redwoods, Douglas Firs, Live Oak, and eucalyptus trees as we walk in community. Bring water and a snack, and wear sturdy shoes for a moderate hike of up to 3 miles round-trip. Meet at the environmental education center.
3 - 4 p.m. Dazzling Dragonflies — As spring transitions to summer, dragonflies begin to take flight. Explore their anatomy, lifecycle, and unique lifestyles as we draw these fascinating insects. Drawing supplies are provided, or bring your own. All levels of experience are welcome! Open to all ages with parent participation.
Sunday
10:30 - 11 a.m. Sunday Story time —Gather around for nature stories read aloud.
1 - 2 p.m. Nature Walk to Jewel Lake — Ferns, dragonflies, trees, birds, and all the mysteries of nature can be yours on this leisurely and informative walk.
4 - 4:30 p.m. Closin' Time on the Farm — Help put the animals to bed and tell them good night. Meet on the farm near the chicken coop.

According to the East Bay Regional Parks website, Tilden Nature Area is a 740-acre preserve located just North of Tilden Regional Park. It has over 10 miles of hiking trails through oak/bay woodlands, grasslands, eucalyptus forests, and streams. Hikes range from the leisurely, self-guided Jewel Lake Nature Trail to a vigorous climb up Wildcat Peak (elevation 1,211 ft.) for panoramic, San Francisco Bay views. A 750-foot boardwalk through the woods leads to Jewel Lake, a historic reservoir and waterworks, and a peaceful place to watch wildlife.
Tilden Nature Area is at 1500 Central Park Drive in Berkeley. Parking is free.
