BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Beverly Hills City Council on Dec. 6 approved the use if its shield for a Beverly Hills-inspired shoe line by Skechers.

The proposed designs include five slip-on shoe designs and one chunky lace-up sneaker with a number of different homages to Beverly Hills, like the famous Beverly Hills banana leaf wallpaper, palm trees and the Beverly Hills shield. The shoe boxes match, with colorful palm tree and banana leaf designs.

The line may also include a blanket and t-shirt and hoodie designs, according to a staff report prepared ahead of the Dec. 6 meeting.

City Council approved the plans so long as the city passes final designs and advertising before production, and there's something in it for the city. The city will receive a one-time payment of $25,000 and royalties thereafter.

"The Beverly Hills Shield logo is a symbol of quality and elegance representing the sophistication and classic styling of an iconic internationally renowned city. It's something that people around the world want to connect with and celebrate," Skechers wrote in its proposal. "As a global footwear brand with extensive experience in both lifestyle and high fashion collaborations, Skechers is positioned to develop a collection featuring Beverly Hills symbols and imagery that honors the city's treasured prestige."

The deal also included a stipulation that Skechers employ "safeguards to protect against any child labor or trafficked labor in production," a staff report prepared ahead of the Dec. 6 meeting said.

As liaisons for the branding and licensing committee, council members John Mirisch and Lester Friedman met with Skechers representatives and the city's trademark licensing agency prior to the Dec. 6 agreement to negotiate terms.

The shoes will be marketed globally and Skechers will look to find retail partners in Beverly Hills, according to the report.
