New California Gas Tax Goes Into Effect July 1
The tax increase is projected to generate more than $50 billion over the next decade for road and infrastructure repairs.

CALIFORNIA — Your wallet is about to feel a little lighter after you fill up for your summer road trip. The new California gas tax goes into effect July 1, adding an additional 5.6 cents to the price of fuel.
The increase is an annual adjustment to the tax the state applies to a gallon of gas — in 2016, California drivers paid about 28 cents per gallon in state taxes, the Sacramento Bee reported. The rate jumped 12 cents per gallon in 2017, after the state government passed a 10-year tax and fee increase, the newspaper said.
This year's gas tax increase will go from 41.7 cents to 47.3 cents per gallon. The money will go toward repairing roads and road infrastructure, and is projected to generate more than $50 billion over the next decade, ABC7 reported.
