Burlingame STAR Scores Higher Than County and State Averages
Burlingame students scored higher on standardized tests than the average San Mateo County and California student.
Burlingame students performed better than other San Mateo County students on English, math and science standardized tests, according to a California Department of Education report released Monday.
Overall, San Mateo County scored higher than state averages, with Burlingame students performing even better.
Burlingame students also generally tested at higher levels in 2010-2011 than during the 2009-2010 school year, except in the Algebra I and Chemistry categories.

The Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) exams have been around since 2003. Students earn one of five levels of performance: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic.
“The significant and sustained improvements we’ve seen for nine consecutive years prove how hard teachers, school employees, administrators, and parents are working to help students achieve despite budget cuts that have affected our schools,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in a statement.

In language arts, mathematics and history, students scoring proficient or advanced were generally in the 70 and 80 percentages. Slightly lesser percentages of proficient and advanced students were achieved in the science categories.
