Disaster Response Drill Planned In San Mateo County

The drill aims to prepare neighbors after a major emergency, when official responders are likely too busy to assist.

BURLINGAME, CA — Residents are invited to sign up to participate in a disaster response drill Oct. 4 in Burlingame to help them work together with other neighbors in an emergency when first responders can't reach them.

The Burlingame Neighborhood Network is inviting residents to sign up for the 12th annual Burlingame Disaster Response Drill.

For the first time, this year the City of Burlingame, the Central County Fire Department, the Burlingame Police Department and Burlingame's Community Emergency Response Team are official sponsors of the drill.

The city will also waive the block closure permit fee for neighborhood groups that host block parties and participate in the drill. However, party organizers are still required to apply for a block party permit a minimum of 10 days in advance of their event.

This free, family-friendly outdoor community event offers participants the chance to practice team-based organizing for disaster relief. You'll learn to relay requests for help using the Zello app, which transforms your cell phone into a walkie-talkie. All training and materials are provided at no cost.
