Just A Drill: Expect Deputy Cars, Blanks Fired In Calabasas Wednesday

The Lost Hills Sheriff's Department will practice responding to an active shooter situation at Lupin Hill Elementary on Wednesday.

CALABASAS, CA — Deputies will practice responding to an active shooter situation at Lupin Hill Elementary School Wednesday, meaning Calabasas residents could see and hear some alarming activity that is no cause for concern.

The training, which will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., is routine for the Las Virgenes Unified School District, Superintendent Dan Stepenosky said. A similar training was held last year at A.E. Wright Middle School and previous trainings have been held at both Calabasas and Agoura High Schools.

Lupin Hill Elementary is located at 26210 Adamor Road.

Deputies will run anywhere from 20-40 short drills throughout the day, which may include noises like firing blanks. The activity will also mean lots of deputy vehicles will drive to and park at the school, which could be concerning for residents. Residents and the city of Calabasas have been warned about the training activity.

Stepenosky always likes to open up district schools for training, as it's important to be proactive and prepared, he said. Summer is a great time for the training given the campuses will be empty, but some volunteers will help the deputies stage scenarios, Stepenosky said.

“With school stuff, you have to keep going — You’ve got to keep saying, 'what next?'” Stepenosky said.

Authorities ask that residents do not come to the school to observe.
