Movie Magic: 125 years of comedy in film
Presentation of the major highlights of screen comedy, illustrated with more than 40 examples from Hollywood's funniest movies.
July 16, 2025 -- Brian Rose, professor emeritus at Fordham University, will give a presentation of the major highlights of screen comedy over the last 125 years, illustrated with more than 40 examples from Hollywood's funniest films.
Skilled acrobatic comedians like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin were enormously popular in the silent era, as were their successors the Marx Brothers and W.C. Fields. Since the beginning of motion pictures, making audiences laugh has been one of the film industry's most popular box office attractions. This presentation offers an interesting and humorous look at the evolution of comedic arts in the filmed entertainment medium.
