"A huge, monumental debut for the sixth installment,'' said Hollywood.com Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. The movie is the fourth-high gross for a Memorial Day weekend in Hollywood history, and was second this year only to "Iron Man 3.''

"The Hangover Part III'' was on track for a $52 million weekend, and has grossed almost $64 million since opening Thursday, said Hollywood.com Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

"Star Trek Into Darkness'' showed a "terrific'' holding power, drawing in $48 million over its second  weekend of exhibition, Degarabedian told City News Service.

A counter-programmed animated movie, "Epic,'' opened in fourth place with a $44 million weekend estimate, according to its studio, Fox.

"Iron Man 3'' held down fifth place with a $24.6 million gate, $372.7 million domestically over four weeks.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by Hollywood.com, were "The Great Gatsby'' ($13.7 million over three days), "Mud'' ($1.9 million over three days), "42'' ($1.2 million over three days), "The Croods'' ($1.6 million over four days) and "Oblivion'' ($1 million over four days).

Four-day totals for all the movies were expected later in the week.
